At Birch Grove Cabin, we believe that sustainability isn’t just about where you stay – it’s about the choices that support that stay. From the food on your breakfast table to the products we use to clean the cabin, our supply chain has been carefully considered with biodiversity, people and place in mind.

Biodiversity thrives when supply chains are shorter, more transparent and rooted in respect for the land. By choosing small, ethical producers – many of them based in Scotland – we aim to support farming, food production and manufacturing practices that work with nature rather than against it.

Thoughtful Choices in Our Welcome Basket

Our welcome basket is a great example of how supply chain decisions can have a positive impact on biodiversity, local economies and guest experience.

Honey – Struan Apiaries

We source our honey from Struan Apiaries, a small family-run business located in near Inverness. Their naturally produced honey supports pollinators, which are essential for biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. We chose Struan Apiaries because they focus on quality rather than quantity, use recyclable glass and cardboard packaging, and produce a product that fits with most vegetarian diets. Supporting local beekeepers also helps protect bee populations and the landscapes they depend on.

Breakfast Cereal – Your Piece Baking Company

Your Piece Baking Company is a Scottish business using Scottish-grown oats, keeping food miles low and supporting local agriculture. Their cereals are free from artificial additives and preservatives, making them a healthier option for guests and gentler on the environment. Oat farming, when responsibly managed, can support soil health and biodiversity, particularly compared to more intensive crops.

Oatcakes – Nairn’s

Oatcakes are synonymous with Scotland, and Nairn’s is a well-known Scottish brand producing oatcakes in Scotland using Scottish oats. They have a clear sustainability policy and a commitment to “playing their part,” which aligns with our own values. Choosing trusted producers who are open about their environmental responsibility helps reinforce better industry standards.

Sparkling Non-Alcoholic Wine – Cairn O’ Mohr Fruit Wines

We wanted a sparkling non-alcoholic option that felt special but also aligned with our principles. Cairn O’ Mohr began as a small, traditional producer and continues to use local fruit and traditional methods. Their vegan-friendly fruit wines support local growers and demonstrate how small-scale production can be both successful and environmentally mindful.

Cheese – Orkney Cheese

Our cheddar comes from Orkney Cheese, a multi-award-winning Scottish producer. Their cheese reflects the quality of local milk and traditional methods, showing how regional food systems can deliver outstanding products while maintaining strong links to the land.

Butter and Milk – Graham’s Family Dairy

Graham’s is a family-run Scottish farm with a long history of dairy production. Supporting family farms helps sustain rural landscapes, livelihoods, careful land management practices that are vital for biodiversity.

Beyond Food: Everyday Products That Matter

Our commitment to biodiversity extends beyond food.

Cleaning Products – Tiboo, Ecover & Method

We use cleaning products from companies that prioritise plant-based ingredients, recyclable packaging. These choices help reduce chemical pollution in waterways and soil, protecting insects, plants and wildlife.

Drinks with Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance Certification

Where possible, we choose drinks carrying Fair Trade and/or Rainforest Alliance labels. These certifications support biodiversity globally by promoting responsible farming, fair pay and the protection of natural habitats.

Toiletries – Highland Soap Company

Our toiletries come from the Highland Soap Company, a Scottish business inspired by the natural landscapes of the Highlands. Their products reflect a respect for nature, using carefully selected ingredients and responsible production methods.

Why Supply Chains Matter

Every product has a story. By choosing suppliers who value biodiversity, ethical sourcing and sustainable practices, we’re helping to protect ecosystems both locally and further afield.

Small decisions – like choosing Scottish oats, family-run farms or recyclable packaging – add up to meaningful impact.

At Birch Grove Cabin, we want your stay to feel comfortable, thoughtful and connected to the natural world around you. Supporting biodiversity through our supply chain is one of the ways we turn that belief into action.
